Who you talk to

Myth: you will be talking to a big company with a sales script. Reality: you will talk to an independent local provider. That provider runs their own business and does the remodeling work. Againstauthority Remodeling only makes the introduction, and it stays out of the way after that.

What happens on the first call

The first conversation is short and relaxed. Expect questions about the room, the size of the project, and what you want changed. A provider may ask about your home too. Is it a frame house from decades ago? A bungalow? A ranch with a basement? These details matter for plumbing, flooring, and access.

The provider will then explain how they would approach the job and suggest next steps, such as a home remodel consultation at your house. Call hours vary by provider.

What to ask a provider

Good questions make a good start. Try these:

  • Do you handle full bathroom or kitchen projects like mine?
  • Are you licensed and insured as local rules require?
  • Will you put the scope, materials, and timeline in a written quote?
  • What could change the price once work begins?
  • How do you protect floors and keep dust down?
  • How does the season affect your schedule?

For luxury bath upgrades or a big kitchen plan, ask to see examples of similar work.

A word on cost

Remodel prices vary a lot by job, materials, and home. Typical U.S. ranges are wide, so get a written quote and compare it with the scope. Be careful with a number given before anyone has seen the space.

You are in control

Talking to a provider does not lock you in. You can ask questions, take time, and speak with more than one provider. There is no obligation. The decision, the contract, and the payment are between you and the provider.
